So, how many of you know what a “Moog synthesizer” is? Maybe quite a few of you. But for those who don’t, it’s a musical instrument whose sounds are created entirely electronically. And Robert Moog himself, was here in Asheville and was the developer and ‘prefecter’ of this new musical medium…in the 1960s. My first experience with it was in 1964 when I heard and then purchased a 33rpm record called “Switched-on Bach” featuring Bach fugues and gigues like you had never heard them! In those days, Moog had to lay down the music tracks one at a time as harmony and a true keyboard was not yet in operation. It was, as they say “iconic”…truly revolutionary. I still have that recording, and a DVD put together more recently by his daughter.
Asheville’s Moogfest last year was a great success with musicians from all over the world who use synthesizers. The variation in the types of music is as large as your imagination. And this year, “Moogfest 2011” is this weekend right here in Asheville, in a variety of venues around town just blocks from our Asheville bed and breakfast. So come on over to Asheville. See the mountains with the copper and bronze shades of Fall leaves and listen to some of the most inventive music that you’ll ever hear. You’ll be glad you did!
